I share my house with a gray tabby cat named Aggie, short for Agatha. Aggie’s favorite game is “where’s Aggie”. She waits until I open a cabinet or closet to put something away and then sneaks inside, usually without me noticing.
One night last week, Aggie did it again. She disappeared. It was late in the evening when I realized I hadn’t seen her in a while. Aggie’s very quick and I feared she might have escaped outside when I took the trash out. Because she’s a house cat and most of the neighborhood cats are bad tempered bullies, I had good reason to be afraid.
After thoroughly searching the house, checking every cabinet, closet, and under beds, I found lots of dust balls, but no Aggie. Now wide awake, I decided to have some warm milk to help me relax. When I opened the cabinet to get a pot, to my surprise Aggie crawled out. Totally unconcerned about my frantic search, she sauntered over to her food, ate a few bites and then looked up at me as if to say, “What’s the big deal? I was fine where I was.”
I know I checked that cabinet in my search. So, why didn’t Aggie come out? I pondered this question, while lying in my bed that night unable to sleep. Then it hit me. I realized Aggie didn’t come out because she didn’t need to. She was perfectly happy where she was.
Whether she’s chasing a piece of paper or curling up in a cabinet, Aggie finds contentment wherever she is. She’s a happy cat. Other than lightning and lawn mowers, not too much bothers her.
Aggie lives in the present and reminds me to do so, as well. So, on those crazy days when you’re worrying about all the things you need to get done, do what I do and take an Aggie Moment. Enjoy it like Aggie by being present and perfectly happy wherever you are!
