Years ago, I experienced a strange pain in my leg, which appeared only at work after sitting in a chair for awhile. I tried changing chairs and various other options to stop the pain, but none worked. Frustrated, I finally decided to make an appointment with a masseuse. She worked on my leg for awhile. Then she asked me if I was about to make a major change in my life.
I was taken back by this question, especially because she was accurate. I had been thinking of leaving my job. The masseuse told me that she found people with this type of muscle pain were often getting ready for a major life change. She said my leg was telling me it was time to walk away and once I did the pain would disappear.
Okay, I thought this was mumbo-jumbo. Come on, how could a leg cramp be telling me to leave my job? But the masseuse was right. Once I gave my notice and left my job, I lost the leg pain. My body had been telling me something.
While not all body aches and pains are due to the need to make a change in one’s life, I do believe some are. Unresolved situations can be stressful and physical problems may develop as the result of that stress. Therefore, when we say, “This (fill in the blank) is making me sick; we really are speaking the truth.
If I don’t feel well, I do believe it’s important to consult with a doctor to eliminate any medical concerns. But, I also believe it’s important to consult with my own body. I check to see if there’s a connection between what I physically feel and what’s happening in my life. If there is something unresolved, I work hard to find the resolution.
I treat my body as a friend who gives me good advice. I pay attention to what it’s saying to me. I know when I listen and take whatever action is necessary; my health generally improves as well.
