Story Photo Challenge: Two faces of the same flower

by Sara on April 27, 2009

the-black-rose

red-roseIf you’ve just arrived, stop for a moment and take a deep calming breath. Are you ready for today’s Photo Story Challenge?

If so, focus on each of these pictures separately. Pay attention to how you feel when you look at each one. Now, look at them together and notice how you feel.

Do you believe they share the same story, or does each one have its own story?

This is your challenge today. Use quotes, taglines or your own words to share something about one or both of these flowers.

Here are some questions to get you thinking. You don’t have to answer them, they’re just to inspire your imagination:

1. What’s your reaction to the flower with the black background? What about the one in red?

2. What words come to your mind when you look at these flowers?

3. If these flowers had certain strengths, what would they be? What about weaknesses?

4. Would these flowers be heroes or anti-heroes? For, or  against each other?

Be creative. Think outside of the box, but most of all have FUN :~)

When I first looked I saw baby elephants. The dark one is stuck in darkness. It could be the darkness of doubt or uncertainty. I do feel that it will overcome that. Maybe the one against red is the same one that transformed itself to fly out of the darkness with the fire of self discovery and overcoming adversity burning in the background……………or it could be two flowers with different colors.

@ Jim — Now that I look at the pictures, I can see the baby elephant. I like the idea of the doubtful elephant being transformed into the red one and flying out of his/her darkness…very cool:~)

The flower with the black background has a certain depth that the white flower doesn’t have. It’s dramatic, mysterious and full of character. It doesn’t need bright colors to make a lasting impact!

@ I love the “Oh, sweet peas!” My mom used to call me “sweet pea.” I grew in the South and there were tons of interesting colloquial expressions, such as “good garden seed, ‘”oh, sugar,” and “katie bar the door!” The dark rose is very difficult to find. It grows only in one deep old forest with all sorts of fairies, unicorns and other magical creatures:~)

Hi Sara. Here is the story that just came to me now as I looked at these. It’s all about me of course! :-) I compare them to looking in the mirror at myself and how well I see, or what I see, or what I believe about what I see. Some days I feel vibrant and other days I feel colourless. When I “see” these two variations of the same flower, I see humility and no judgment. They are not competing with each other.

@ Davina — That’s interesting…they are the same then…just different moods, eh? I like that:~)

I just noticed how you spelled color and it reminded my of last post about remembering the differences in how we spell some words in the US and how they are spelled it in Canada and the UK. The one that always gets me is organization, which in the UK is spelled organisation. Funny how you don’t think a spell checker should show a country bias, but it’s obvious the WordPress spell checker is US and not UK:~)

Human beings often underestimate how affected they are by color and texture. Each person has associations with light and darkness, with emotions that are attached to color themselves. People do not often question why they assume black is associated with positive or negative feelings, and white or read assocaited with love and passion or some other feeling

For instance, it used to be weddings were only associated with white and funerals, black. In modern times, bridesmaids have been known to wear black for its elegance and brides are not always wearing white. Funerals have become occasions for different colors now. People learn a lot about themselves from their own choices of color in clothing, their living space and other sources of orientation. Beliefs, values and moods show themselves.

@ Liara — You couldn’t be more right about how colors affect us! I struggled with this a bit recently when my eldest, who’s getting married in September, decided her maid of honor would wear black. We do associate certain colors with feelings. Very interesting. Thanks for sharing:~)
