In Switzerland

Bonjour! Bienvenue vers la Suisse.

I am currently living in Switzerland in a tiny village called Leysin, which is in the French region of Switzerland (I’ll get to that in a minute).  My boyfriend, JC, is the program director for a five-week FSU international program teaching 22 students about hospitality in Europe. The students have class for three days in Switzerland and then travel on their own throughout Europe. This is our second year of making this trip.

By the way, JC said if I was going to talk about him in this post, he should get to have his say as well. His comments are in red italic. I think you’ll enjoy his sense of humor:~)

I’m a life partner

This is the term which allows me to accompany JC on this trip. According to him this means I get to do the laundry, clean, and sometimes cook (if using the microwave is considered cooking). JC is a chef. So, when I have cooking duty, I  just ask him if I cook the spaghetti for 20 or 30 minutes. Before you can say “boil water,” he’s up and taking over the cooking.  See I’m not so dumb!

So far we haven’t killed each other, even though neither of us are particularly good travelers.  The last time we came, I almost killed him by accident when we were driving up an incredibly dangerous mountain road. I made the mistake of saying, “oh, look at that view!” (We almost had a scenic view of flying over the mountain!) Driving in Switzerland is a lesson in patience and terror!

Languages spoken

But I digress, I wanted to tell you a little about Switzerland and include some of my pictures of our journey so far. Switzerland has three major regions by language – German, French and Italian. Well, there is one more, called Romansch which is spoken by only about 100,000 people. I’ve yet to meet someone who speaks this language! (Even though I can read French menus with no problem, I recently made the mistake of ordering pineapple on my pizza instead of peppers. Nothing like adding pineapple to sausage, olives, and onions to ruin a good pizza! While Sara denies it, I think this menu was written in Romansch.)

What’s interesting is that each region uses only its language. In other words, if you drive out of the French region into the German regions, the road signs ALL are written in German with no French translation. It’s truly like leaving one country and entering another.

Switzerland pictures

Okay, that’s enough lecture for one post:~) Onward to the pictures. Let me set the scene. In Leysin, we are about 5,000 feet straight up a mountain. For a Florida girl used to flat lands, this can be a rather intimidating climb. (Or someone who’s only driven a stick shift once in forty years. When I  stall on a hill,  drivers forced to pass me yell sweet words of encouragement in French…or maybe they weren’t words of encouragement?) Sometimes it’s good not to understand the language.

Last year, I decided to walk down the mountain to the village by taking the “short cut,” which is a set of stone stairs straight down. Going down was easy; coming back up was hell (pardon my English!) On the other hand, the mountain views are beyond magnificent.

Here are some of pictures of Leysin and the Alps.  Appréciez la vue.

The higher mountains still have snow, but most will be gone when we leave.

I climbed up into a cow pasture to take this shot. While curious, the cows left me to my photography, preferring to eat their lovely green grass!

Signs leading to various Leysin activities! As you can see, there are lots of schools and hotels in Leysin.

I laughed at JC comments! You two make a great comedy team.

The next time you go, maybe you would like to hire someone (like me) to carry your bags?

@ Roger — JC says that you would be welcome to carry the bags, just be aware that the climb up to our apartment is straight up a very tall mountain…no kidding. When we walked up the stairs (sans bags) from the village to our apartment, we had to keep stopping and pretend we were taking photos so we could catch our breath. By the time we reached the top, we both were sweating and looked like we had…well, climbed a mountain.

The Swiss, on the other hand, practically fast walk these same stairs, even older people with canes go faster than we could:~)

WOW, the view from your balcony! GORGEOUS!

@ Regina — I never thought I could find a place I could love as much as the ocean/gulf (the Florida girl in me), but I’m loving the Alps. Every time I look out at the mountains, there’s something new to see. Today is an exception as we are totally fogged in. This is definitely NOT a good day to go walking in the mountains!

Wow, these pictures are beautiful! I want to go there! Thanks for sharing your experience…It’s nice to read this while plugging away at my desk, looking longingly out the window. :) Your journey seems great!

@ Dani — I loved your last post! I want those magic ray-bans. Switzerland is a magical place to me. As I’ve said, I feel like I’m living in a post card…every single place is beautiful. The only weird thing is there aren’t very many wild animals (except in zoos). For example, I never see squirrels or rabbits…lots of birds, including one that I call the “squeaky wheel” bird. He sounds EXACTLY like a squeaky bike wheel. Unfortunately, he likes to sing right outside our window at 6AM. I don’t like killing any animal, but squeaky wheel is testing my patience (just kidding):~)

Your description of your photo taking exploits remind me of Betsy Wuebker’s husband Pete. I’ve suggested Betsy put Pete on one of those “toddler” leashes because he’s all the time risking life and limb to get the amazing photos that grace her blog Passing Thru. I’ll admonish JC to do the same for you – lest you fall off one of those breath takingly beautiful mountains trying to get the “perfect” shot.

@ Kathy — JC says that he wants to talk to Betsy and find out how she manages Pete. I’m the photo taker and very much like Pete…anything for a good shot:~) The only good thing is I’m also a bit of a coward. JC says, “thank goodness!”

Hi Sara.
These photos are breathtaking! Switzerland has always been on my list of places to visit. You and JC make a great team… especially in the kitchen :-)

I find it interesting how there is no translation for the areas that use other languages. I’d be lost I think.

@ Davina — Thanks about the photos and I think EVERYONE should visit Switzerland at least once. I haven’t found a place yet that didn’t make me want to say, “beautiful, beautiful…wish you were here!”

Regarding the languages, I forgot to say that while signs are in one language, almost everyone in Switzerland speaks some English. The key phrases for us as we travel are Parlez-vous anglais ?, Sprechen Sie Englisch?, and Parla inglese? If we end up with someone who speaks Romansch, we’re in trouble:~)

Hi Sara. Wow, Switzerland – how amazing it must be to live there (and what an adjustment). Well, I am back from my much needed break and I wanted to thank you for your kind words of encouragement when I needed my break – I appreciate your help.

Good to see you again.

@ Danifer — WOW…you’re back! I’ll be visiting your site today! Regarding Switzerland, this is my second year coming here and it has been easier this year to adjust. JC and I enjoy settling in and we love Leysin, it’s a small, but beautiful village.

Regarding your return, I’m glad the break did you well and that you’re back. You have a very original voice and deserve to be heard:~)

@ Julie — I’m glad to hear from you! I do feel lucky now that I’m here again. I really wondered about coming back, but this time has been much easier. The neat thing about Switzerland is that you can go almost any place in the country in about four to five hours and it borders five different countries. The FSU kids love it because they can see so many countries with ease given the rail system.

Hi Sara,
I have really enjoyed the beauty of your blog today. Can’t believe you are in Switzerland! It seems like a dream….

I love the collage you made about your childhood. Very expressive and with a very happy, positive spin. I encourage to keep doing this with all the phases of your life, looking for the best and choosing to focus on that.

I hope you continue to have a wonderful trip!

@ Audra — Thank you for your nice comment about my collage. Each year as I get older, I am filling my glass a bit more…so, I can now truthfully say I see my glass half full and not half empty:~) Regarding Switzerland, it is lovely and I’ll be posting more pictures while I’m here!

Ok…I am going to stay and hang out here for awhile looking at those pictures. Lucky duck!!! I love Switzerland…the Alps are so amazing and very spiritual to me. Enjoy all that beauty. And the chocolate. And the cheese. And all that quaint European “stuff”…lol, so eloquent.

@ Caroline — You can look at the pictures all you want…I just wish I could show you video…maybe that will come with my next camera! I agree with you about the Alps being spiritual. They have that ever-changing beauty that takes your breath away. Regarding the food, you have to be careful here…it is so easy to overeat. They don’t really believe in low-fat anything…but I guess climbing mountains on a daily basis is exercise enough:~)

Wow I am impressed. I am taking my first vacation trip to Scotland in July – my hiking tour was canceled – we found a castle’s tour to trade into…I think I had best put Switzerland on my list.

Thank you so much for sharing and your good humored companion :)

@ Patricia — I’ve never been to Scotland and I’ve always wanted to go. You’ll have to share your pictures!!! It’s funny because my eldest daughter lives in London, England and Scotland’s is only about 330 miles away. I hope you have a fantastic trip and enjoy your castles…I’ve heard they’re beautiful. Also, my good humored companion says that you must go to St. Andrews…then again, he loves golf:~)

Wow these pictures are awesome! I’m glad to know that you are having an awesome time in Switzerland! Your pictures remind me of Austria. I had to cancel my plans to Austria (a neighboring country) in June due to some rescheduling of my husband’s business trip. So sad :-(

@ Evelyn — Thanks for your comment. Yes, I am having a great time in Switzerland. The only problem is being able to get reliable Internet where I am. I suppose the mountains make this difficult at times.

I imagine the pictures I’ve taken are similar to what you would see in Austria. I’m so sorry about your trip. Hopefully, there will be another time to visit Austria! I’m sure you would love it:~)
