Note to Readers: JC had so much fun reading all the comments in the last Swiss post, that he insisted on adding his “two bits” to this post, as well. His comments are in green.
As part of the FSU International program I’m with in Switzerland, we visited a Swiss city, Interlaken, which is in the German region. The college students love this trip. They tour two lovely hotels, are treated to a wonderful lunch in each, and…here’s the best part… participate in one of the many extreme sports offered in Interlaken.
Mountain daredevils
Interlaken, which is located between two alpine lakes, is known for its daredevil activities. In addition to the “normal” activities of walking, biking and hiking, you can choose between canyoning, riding horses through the mountains, skydiving, white water rafting, paragliding, bungee jumping and zorbing, which is rolling down a hill inside a big plastic ball, just to name a few. As recently as 2008, Interlaken was included in the Top 15 Adventure Towns Worldwide!
Adventures of JC and Sara
Sounds like fun, right? Well, for JC and me this is a town of nightmares. We aren’t necessarily strong of heart or stomach. Our adventures are more like trying a food we’ve never eaten before or walking around town without a map. Take my word for it, given our sense of direction this is an extreme sport!
But we had to do something! We didn’t want to lose face and seem like old fogeys and yet the very idea of jumping out of an airplane or climbing down canyons, the choices made by the students, seemed a bit too “white knuckles” to us. I was going to do some extreme beer drinking but last year the CD the students created from their Interlaken trip featured me prominently holding up a huge stein of beer. This year, I still had a beer but made sure I was up high enough that no students were around to take pictures! Just so you know, JC only had a couple of beers:~)
Climbing a mountain
While desperately looking through a brochure, we found it! Called the Harderbahn, it’s a funicular train that goes to the top of the Harder Kulm Mountain. I thought it was extreme enough just using the word funicular and harderbahn in the same sentence. It’s advertised as a good adventure for families with young children. In Disney terms, it’s like riding the spinning cups versus the huge roller coasters. However, it seemed perfect for JC and I as it also included a restaurant at the top.
So, we bought our tickets and loaded in this little red train with all the rest of the non-daredevil people. What can I say? You have to like going up the roller coaster at a snail’s pace, while watching the world below drop away from you. Note: the smart people knew to sit the opposite way so they were looking up instead of down.
Actually, I enjoyed this trip very much. It only took 8 minutes and it was kind of fun, especially since I knew the train (hopefully) wouldn’t go over the top like a roller coaster. Or down the hill without brakes! While we didn’t do extreme sports we could have visions of hurdling down the mountain and flying over the town. Now, that would have been an EXTREME sport!
I watched Interlaken becoming smaller and smaller as we climbed. At the end, you reach a gothic, chalet restaurant and some really magnificent views. You see not only Interlaken, but also the Bernese Alps and the two lakes, Thun and Brienz.
JC and I had an extreme adventure that was perfect for us! So, wherever you are, lift your drink of choice (water is allowed) and say in German, Beifall zu Ihrer Gesundheit.
I, of course, took pictures, even though the weather wasn’t the best. Here they are:

Here we are watching the city get smaller and smaller….

Okay, it’s getting kind of high now and just a bit steep!

FINALLY…we’re at the top. This is just before we exited!

Our view of Interlaken from the top. Things look kind of tiny, don’t they?

Due to travel and Memorial Day, there will be no Monday Photo Challenge, but it will be back June 1, 2009. I’ll have a special challenge for you!

I think JC could have done some extreme beer drinking to PREPARE for an extreme sport. Liquid courage always helps.
Roger | A Content Lifes last blog post..Meditation for Beginners (Week 3) – Insight Meditation
@ Roger — JC agrees with you and thanks you for reminded NE that men sometimes need a bit of liquid courage, especially when it tastes as good as Interlaken beer:~) Thanks for commenting, Roger!
Great photos and I love the little inserted comments too.
Nice!
Positively Presents last blog post..5 things happy people do
@ Positively Present — We aim to please! JC is having a great time adding his comments. Thanks for stopping by:~)
sara your first picture is amazing!! and i am scared to death of heights!!
@ Pat — As I said to someone else, I not fond of heights, but Switzerland does something to you. You just can’t resist wanting to go up the mountain and look down. It’s sooooo beautiful! On the other hand, when the funnicular started climbing, I was a tiny bit nervous. Thanks for your comment:~)
Gorgeous pictures!!! I love the snow on the mountains and the quaint village….ahhhhh. OK, I have to say…I would totally get into one of those plastic balls and roll down the hill!!! Then have a huge stein of good “bier”
Carolines last blog post..Fabulous Friday!
@ Caroline — You are a daredevil — good for you! Those plastic balls are the ones that even the people who parachute are afraid of. Evidently, you have to have a really good stomach to make it down the mountain! According to the people who live in Interlaken, they would give you a free “bier” if you made it:~) Thanks for you comment and I’m glad you like the pictures! I love your site, by the way!
I love Switzerland! These pictures make me want to go back and visit. The people are wonderful and the mountains are breathtaking.
There is nothing wrong with having a glass of beer, although their glasses of beer are huge. One stein can knock you on your butt.
Karl Staib – Work Happy Nows last blog post..A Work Happy Now Interview on Let It Flow
@ Karl — Isn’t Switzerland wonderful? We just returned from France and while France was lovely, I’m really glad to be back in Switzerland. I agree with you about the people and the mountains. Right now the temperature is about 65 degrees Fahrenheit, but if I home in Florida it would be about 85 degrees…I like Switzerland:~)
Oh, and the wonderful memories flood back! Interlaken especially! I loved everything about Switzerland but admittedly some of the heights were at first nerve wracking but the gift on top is indescribable!
Thank you for sharing this and enjoy the rest of your trip! :~)
Henies last blog post..Memorial Day
@ Henie — Driving in Switzerland, especially where we are, is truly nerve wracking. JC has had to relearn driving with a stick and I have to remember to never say, “Oh look at that!” I’m glad you enjoyed the post and the pictures. Thanks for sharing your thoughts:~)
Hi Sara,
I wish I was there. Switzerland looks like such a beautiful place. One day, I hope to see it as well.
Thank you for sharing the beautiful photos.
Happy travels!
Barbara Swaffords last blog post..What If…
@ Barbara — I’m pleased that you liked the pictures. We just returned from a long trip to France and I’m really glad to be back in Switzerland. If I had a magic wand, I would transport everyone here, if just for a short time….it is so incredibly beautiful. Thanks for your comment, Barbara:~)
yikes! That looks amazing but I probably would have died of fright. I am terrified of heights, but love views go figure. I am envious of anyone who can manage them. Awesome photos!
Shannaniganss last blog post..Only 10 more to go!
@ Shannanigans — Well..it’s understandable about views versus heights. I live in Florida, which is pretty flat. I’m terrified of roller coasters or anything like that. But I truly adore standing on a mountain looking down into a valley…go figure! Thanks for your comment and I’m glad you enjoyed the pictures:~)
Wow Sara, It is beautiful. The country which I want to visit someday.
Thank you for sharing, Sara.
Arswinos last blog post..14 Facts of Life You Must Know
@ Arswino — From what I know of you via your blog, you would love this country. I hope you do get to visit it someday. Thanks so much for your comment:~)
Happy traveling and what great photographs – thank you for sharing – my partner would love trying all these sports and would probably break something! I don’t think I will share this post with him! ha ha1
Thank you
Patricias last blog post..Hesitation
@ Patricia — Yes, it’s very easy to break something in Interlaken. Maybe it is GOOD that you don’t share this post with him or you might find yourself leaping out of an airplane in the middle of the Alps…hopefully with a parachute! I’m just glad JC is like me…we’re both basically scaredy cats! Thanks for sharing, Patricia:~)
Lovely shots Sara — it looks like you’re having quite an adventure.
@ Chris — That we are…having an adventure. We just drove to France and back. We were supposed to take the interstate, but somehow got on the wrong road. It turned out to be a wonderful adventure as we drove through all sorts of towns and back roads. Thanks for commenting:~)
Hi Sara. Love your pictures. What a beautiful view… even though I’m terribly afraid of heights I can still appreciate this. Wow! I find that some of the best photographs are taken on gray days. The colours are much more richer.
Davinas last blog post..Positively Breathing — Affirmation 4
@ Davina — Howdy friend! I used to think I was afraid of heights, but Switzerland has changed me. I’m cautious, but you just can’t resist looking because everything is so picture perfect. I wish my camera was like my eyes and could capture everything I see. The other day, there was the most amazing full rainbow over the mountains. My camera couldn’t capture the whole thing and so I watched it until it faded…it was glorious and awe inspiring, to say the least.
I’ve been traveling, but I see that Affirmation 4 is up….I’ll be visiting your site soon to catch up:~)
