Quiet time
Today, for the story photo challenge, I’m sharing with you some pictures of dogwood flowers I took this spring in the early evening time.
To me, there’s something magical about evening time. Perhaps, it’s because this is my quiet time; a time when I settle down and relax for the day. I often sit on my back porch, watching the birds eat and the day begin to slowly fade into night.
In spring time
In spring time, I love watching the sun slowly lower itself down through the trees in the back of my yard. I love how it reaches out with long arms of warm sunlight, touching the dogwood trees and illuminating the skin of their lovely white flowers.
Many times, I’ve taken my camera out into my yard and tried to capture the special glow evening light gives to my garden flowers. Sometimes it willingly shows itself to me and I can capture it with my camera; other times, it’s illusive and hides before the shutter blinks.
The end of the day
Many people who have written about evening refer to it as the end of the day. Not me. I see it as a time of transition; the moments before we are slowly eased into our night, so sleep can come and bring us a new day.
What about you? Your story photo challenge for today is to pick one of the questions below and answer it in the comment box:
How do you feel about evening time?
What time of day do you love the most?
When do you feel most at peace and relaxed?
What question would you like to answer about nature today?
Enjoy. Be creative. Have fun:~)

Hi Sara,
My two favorite times of day are early morning as the sun is coming up, and dusk – as the sun is going down. Mornings, especially, have a special draw for me – I see it as the start of a new day (literally and figuratively) – and in those moments – quiet moments – the peace that this brings.
Dusk, though, also holds a special place for me. The setting sun. A time of seeing the beauty of the day. And I love how you see this as a transition – such a wonderful way to see day going into night! In fact, reading that just added another layer to what dusk means to me.

@ Lance — Thank you for your nice comment and also sharing how you feel about morning and dusk. While I bet I’d agree with you about the dawn, I don’t function very well in the early morning hours. Usually, it takes about three cups of tea before my eyes can actually focus:~) Seriously, I do agree that the transition moments, whenever they occur, can be very peaceful. I appreciate you sharing:~)
Beautiful shots, Sara. Evening is the wind-down time of my day..and always there’s a bit of melancholy attached.

@ Talon — That’s interesting about the wind down time being kind of melancholy. You aren’t alone. In my prep for this post, I tried to find a happy quote about evening and, to be honest, I couldn’t. I could find them about dawn and night, but not evening! Thank you for your comment about the pictures. It made me smile with pride, especially coming from you as I think you are a wonderful photographer:~)
These are beautiful photos Sara. My favourite time of the day is early morning when everything is still quiet and seemingly untouched. When the sun’s rays are just warm, the air is still dewy from the night before and the air is fresh. That is when I feel most relaxed.

@ Davina — Thank you ma’am about the photos! I wish I could enjoy the dawn, but as I said to Lance…I can barely keep my eyes open to watch the sun rise:~) I’m much more of a evening/early night kind of person. I thought as I got older, I would change as so many of my friends did, but it was not to be. My mornings are sloooooow. However, the few occasions I have woken at dawn and sat outside, listening the chorus of birds waking and frogs slowly quieting…it was special and relaxing. Thanks for sharing, Davina:~)
Gorgeous photos! My parents have a dogwood tree in their front yard and I adore it. It was a present from my grandfather when they moved there and now that he has passed on it has become a special symbol.
Evening is my favorite time of day. I love the sunset and the air cooling down and things getting a little bit darker. It’s relaxing and calms my soul.

@ Caity — Oh, it’s so nice that your grandfather gave the gift of a dogwood tree and that it reminds you of him. I love to hear how nature carries on family traditions. I have a couple of pine trees in the back of my yard that I planted with my girls when they were little. I like looking at both the pine trees and my daughters to see how well they’ve grown:~)
Ah, a kindred soul about evening! I do agree it’s a very relaxing and calm time of the day, especially in the summer as I have more time to fully embrace evening. Thanks for comment about the photos and for sharing your thoughts, Caity:~)
How do you feel about evening time?
I love the night. I am a night owl and stay up until the sun rises. I love how the darkness of night covers up the harshness of the day with a dark blanket. I love the mystery of night, and how when you stand under the stars it seems like anything is possible.
.-= Shannanigans´s last blog ..Bummer =-.
@ Shannanigans — Such wonderful poetic words about night…I like them very much! While I can’t do overnighters anymore, I agree about being outside at night, looking at the stars. This is the one time when I really feel small, but in a good way. It’s like you can really see the Universe under the cover of darkness and I agree with your words that “it seems like anything is possible.” Maybe you should write a post about night? Anyway, thanks for sharing your thoughts:~)
Oh gosh it has been way way too long! So much good stuff to catch up on.
I love this post. I too am a night owl…I love to be up while the house is still and quiet. I can work on my photos and be creative.

@ Caroline — WELCOME! It has been too long. How are the photos going?
About being a night owl: While I can’t stay up like I used to, I do remember when my kids were little, I also loved the moments when everyone was asleep and the house was quiet. For lack of a better word, it always felt snuggly to me…comfortable and happy.
Regarding your photos, I am so pleased that you are highlighting them, as well as your creative designs using them. You have so much talent, Caroline! I imagine it must be difficult at times to choose which one you pursue. I’m so glad you’re back and thank you for sharing:~)
What lovely flowers.

I love evenings. No other time of the day I like more than evenings. And I completely agree with your description of an evening as a time of transition.
@ Sunny — It’s nice to know that there are others who also enjoy their evenings:~)
Sara,
Firstly, the pictures are breathtaking. I absolutely love them.
As for my favorite time of day….hmmm…i would like to think of the whole day as my favorite…cause my little minds is constantly in overdrive..whatever the time. My hubby often says….”even when you just wake up, youre raring to go…relax.”
But the time i can think best..and most clearly is early morning just ‘before’ the sunrise. There is a certain Godliness i somehow associate with that time…i often have long conversations with God at that time:)…i prefer to think everyone is asleep..so God will probably listen to me more carefully:)

@ Zeenat — Welcome! You sound like you have a lot of enthusiasm. While I understand what your husband said about how you are in the morning, I wouldn’t mind being “raring to go” at that time of day. It takes me a long time to get moving. I also agree that it’s easy to have God conversations in the transition moments of a day…like dawn or evening…they do feel like sacred times. I smiled when I read your line, “i prefer to think everyone is asleep..so God will probably listen to me more carefully.” I think God would listen to you at any time:~)
