Sitting Empty on the Beach

lonely-beach-chair1The Lonely Beach Chair

I didn’t notice it at first because I was so excited to be back at the beach. Plus, it was surrounded by other beach-goers who were enjoying the late afternoon sun, decked out with chairs, umbrellas and coolers.

It wasn’t until everyone had left, having taken their beach paraphernalia with them, that I finally saw it. It was sitting by itself, facing out into the waves.

There was a sadness about this chair that struck me, even from a distance. I figured someone must have left it there for a reason.

lonely-beach-chair2But after dinner I saw the chair again. The sun had just set, leaving a finger of light sparkling across the water. I couldn’t believe someone hadn’t come for this chair, or at least moved it farther from the wash of the waves.

It sat alone; a plain, simple beach chair. I thought about moving it, but wondered if someone wanted it to stay there for a reason. So, I left it.

The next morning I drank my coffee outside on the deck. The chair was still in the same place, sitting patiently at the water’s edge. I felt some relief because it hadn’t been washed away or run over by the vehicle that had made those circles in the sand.

During the day I watched as people came and went. Some laid on their beach towels right next to the chair. No one ever touched it olonely-beach-chair3r put a towel on it, or pulled it over for an extra, unexpected visitor. The fisherman didn’t even make use of this seat; preferring to wade out into the waves to cast his line.

I wondered who had left it and why. Was it destined to be swept away by the waves? It looked sturdy enough and certainly would be a good chair for someone. Still, no one claimed it.

The Chairman of the Beach

Day turned to night again. The sun put on a glorious show, and amidst the glow from the vibrant sky, the lonely beach chair seem lonelier.

By this point, I had become quite attached to this chair. JC kept asking me why I didn’t just take it, but I didn’t feel right about doing that. The chair seemed to be waiting patiently. Maybe its owner would come back.

lonely-beach-chair4On our last day at the beach I woke and checked on the chair again. To my surprise, there was a man sitting in it. I looked closer through the lens of my camera. This man looked familiar.

Curious, I walked down to the beach and lo and behold, it was JC, my boyfriend! He was sitting comfortably in the chair drinking his morning coffee.

I tapped him on the shoulder and he turned to me with a big smile on his face. “I couldn’t stand hearing you talk about this lonely chair anymore,” he said. “So, I decided to sit with it for awhile. Now, you can take a picture of the two of us to remember that someone did enjoy this lonely little beach chair.”

What a special man he is. Don’t you agree?

Hi Sara – Love the chair AND the story – you could really develop this one into a full-blown short story. And yes, your Chairman of the Beach is exceptional!

Lovely story, Sara. I like how you and others respected the chair’s presence and let it be even though it seemed lonely. And how JC knew just the right time to greet it and bring it out of its loneliness.

Yes, I love the ending too, and yes, he is special! Love the photos, and I think with the color of the sun, it doesn’t look near as lonely. In fact, there’s a peacefulness to it.

What a sweetie! Funny, I didn’t think the chair was lonely…I thought it looked like it was simply waiting…

Hi Sara,

My first impression was, “what a tranquil looking photo”. I envisioned myself on the beach, not necessarily disturbing or sitting in the chair, but enjoying the beauty of it sitting next to the water. Your photos captured it beautifully.

I love what JC did. And what a surprise that must have been for you. What a guy. He sounds like a “keeper”. :)

Sara Sweetie,
Such a cute story. I love how youre so bothered about the chair…it being inanimate and all. I am like that…and most of the time my hubby is on the receiving end of that chain of thought…the poor guy will try his level best to divert my mind…but you know us gals..we dont let go that easily. Finally only a running around warning to tickle me works ;)
But your boyfriend is such a darling to give the chair company…all cause You were uneasy seeing it all alone.
I tell you these men can be such sweet surprises..one minute they are messiness personified..and the next minute sweetness :)
Lots of love

@ Talon — I hadn’t thought about the chair just waiting. It certainly had a nice view:~)

Sara December 4, 2009 at 10:35 am

@ Barbara — Thanks about the photos. The beach is such an easy subject; I always find something for the camera! You are so right about JC…he is a keeper:~)

Sara December 4, 2009 at 10:40 am

@ Tess — When I was a kid, one of my favorite books was called The Lonely Doll. I think this chair sort of reminded me of that story. It’s strange but the book, The Lonely Doll, is evidently experiencing a rebound. It’s interesting because Dare Wright used photography to tell the story:~)

Sara December 4, 2009 at 10:49 am

@ Zeenat — I’m not sure why I see inanimate objects as something with feelings, but I do occasionally, hence the beach chair. Usually the “thing” has to capture my attention in some way and you’re right about not letting go easily!!

I am lucky about JC. He is the first person who really enjoyed my “creative” imagination. If I say I see a face in a tree, he will stop and look at it to see what he sees. Often his imagination amazes me! He’ll see things I never thought of. We all need someone to appreciate our passions and JC always does that for me:~)

Sara December 4, 2009 at 10:52 am

@ Karen — Thank you about the story and the photos. The beach is such a magical place for me. I see shells that become sunbathers, driftwood that becomes a person wailing and beach chairs that are lonely:~) Thank goodness JC enjoys this part of me!

Sara December 4, 2009 at 10:56 am

@ Carol — Sometimes it’s nice to have a happy ending, isn’t it:~)

Sara December 4, 2009 at 10:58 am

@ Patty — Truth be told, I think JC was tired of hearing about the chair. He’s very patient with me. I’m sure a part of him that wanted to say….”It’s just a chair,” but he didn’t and he gave my imagination the happy ending it needed:~)

Sara December 4, 2009 at 10:59 am

@ Mike — I’m glad you liked it. Sometimes it’s fun just to tell a story:~)

Sara December 4, 2009 at 11:06 am

@ suZen — In another comment, I mentioned a book that I loved as a kid called, The Lonely Doll. This book was a true picture story because the author, Dare Wright, used photos of dolls and stuffed animals to tell the story. I think that book provided the inspiration for this story. Perhaps someday, I will write a full-blown picture story:~)

Hi Sara .. amazing story to share at Christmas .. I just looked and thought not now, surely? It’s evocative .. and I love what JC did: take on some ownership for you – satisfying the chair, and fulfilling a wish of yours for the chair not to feel alone. King Canute syndrome obviously didn’t call .. the chair waited for you!!

Thanks for popping over to see me .. and it’s good to know your daughter is up the road, I guess? as I’m in Eastbourne on the south coast ..
Enjoy the day .. Hilary Melton-Butcher

Hi Sara.
Such a playful and comfortable story. It was neat how you left the chair where it was and how you became so preoccupied by its presence. Metaphorically speaking, it was like you were sitting in that chair the whole time… THAT’S why nobody else was. :-)

This is just so sweet, Sara!

I would’ve worried so about that chair being lonely too.

So those are the actual photos you took, right? And that’s JC in it??

Brilliant! And such a pretty chair, I like the stripes — reminds me of olden days of glory and simpler times of travel’s romance and heyday.

What a beautiful-looking beach, how lucky you are. Wish I were in Florida today right in that spot, right in that chair. Heaven!!

What a lovely meditation on loneliness! A truly affecting prose poem. I was mesmerized by the pictures and the words.

Sara December 6, 2009 at 11:34 am

@ Hilary — I greatly enjoyed visiting your site and learning so much about Christmas. It’s also nice to know someone near my daughter. She lives in London and so you’re about 50 miles away. That’s pretty close when considering distances in the States:~)

I’m glad you liked the story of the lonely beach chair. I had to look up the King Canute syndrome and again learned something new! Thanks:~)

Sara December 6, 2009 at 11:39 am

@ Davina — It is interesting that I never thought to go sit in the chair myself. It didn’t seem right somehow, yet when JC was sitting in…he looked right for it. I always believed it was a fisherman’s chair and that he would return for it. I go back to the beach soon and I’ll have check it out:~)

Sara December 6, 2009 at 11:45 am

@ knallan — I am pleased that you visited and enjoyed the story and pictures:~) I liked your post about the anger quotes. The one by Buddha was perfect for me!!

Sara December 6, 2009 at 11:52 am

@ Liara — Thank you. I like the idea that I never leave anything out. I am listening to my own voice with writing. It makes it so much more fun for me and I appreciate that you noticed this:~)

Sara December 6, 2009 at 12:03 pm

@ Jannie — I’m glad you liked the story. The only sad part of this story is that we did have to leave the chair. As I said in Davina’s comment, I believed the chair belonged to a fisherman and that he’d come back. Unless of course, it belonged to a Mermaid who came out at night to watch the moon and moved the chair so that the water never took it. Ya never know:~)

Regarding the Cape San Blas beach, it is beautiful. I once published a picture I took at the beach and called it Florida Snow. There were people who actually believed it was snow….that’s because the sand at this beach is so white…it’s amazing. Come visit some time!

Hi Sara
I love how the photos support your story and of course things deserve love.
You can see the chair smile with that loving person in it and now it has made me smile.
It allowed JC to say “I love you”, how wonderful is that.

@ Serena — Thanks for your comment and you’re not a sap, but rather the fact that a tear came to your eye showed that you must have a lot of compassion:~)

Sara December 9, 2009 at 2:34 pm

@ Wilma — What a nice comment. Thanks. I like the idea of seeing the chair smile and you’re right…how could I not smile when JC sat in it? It was a special way to share his love:~)
