Picture Story: My Turn Now

This is JC. I’ve decided that it’s my turn at “A Sharing Connection” to share.

canon new camera

Sara got a new Canon camera for Christmas. While she’s excited about it, she’s also struggling to handle all the bells and whistles that come with this one. To be honest, this hasn’t been an easy task as this camera isn’t a “point and shoot” camera, like her old one.

I love her dearly, but Sara’s not the most patient learner and she hates reading the instructional manuals. Consequently, she wasn’t as pleased as she’d like with the pictures she took at the beach.

On the other hand, I am confident that when she takes time to read more about the camera and learns what it is capable of, she will be delighted with her pictures. I already am.

the beach pictures

Therefore, since I happen to really LIKE many of the pictures she took, I am stepping in as guest author and editor today. I went through her pictures and picked out my five favorites from her new camera to share with you.

These pictures reflect the beautiful beaches at Cape San Blas, Florida at different times; in bright sunlight and before storms. We had all sorts of weather this trip!

In addition, there are two I picked just like because they are typical of what Sara sees to photograph.

My advice to her is this: A person once stopped a man walking down the street in New York City and asked, “How do I get to Carnegie Hall?” The man answered “Practice, practice.”

The photos are beautiful. I’m glad you took temporary charge, JC. If this is the beautiful quality of photos Sara is achieving with a new camera that’s unfamiliar to her, I can only imagine how magnificent they will be (to us and to her) when she gets used to it.

I love the bare foot imprint – but imprint seems wrong as it seems like more an out-print. Absolutely stunning!

Love the pictures and since I can not read manuals and figure them out, I understand the lack of patience. But these are great pictures and I appreciate your sharing.

I can not fill out many forms either….My IT just had my partner sit down with me and step by step we walked thru learning how to back up on my external drive. He wrote out the steps on a piece of paper. When we have backed up the writing and pictures 10 times I will be able to do it with his prompt sheet and I will no longer be a problem.

I try to bring my IT along if I need good, stunning pictures….and I bought her the fancy camera ….good plan huh?
I liked this post…and Florida WOW…warm

Hi Everyone,

Wasn’t JC nice to help me get over myself about the photos? He will be answering comments, but today is golf day. He’s been complaining a bit about his game and so, I asked him today before he left, “How do you get to Carnegie Hall?”

He laughed:~)

Sara December 22, 2009 at 11:14 am

@ Patricia — Thanks about the pictures. I’ll still not totally happy with them, but as JC said “practice, practice!”

I laughed about what you said about backing up your external drive and the 10 times of practice:~) Oh, this is of me too. I only go to the manual when I’m in trouble, which is not EXACTLY what the manual is intended for. I’m sure I’ll eventually figure this camera out, but they’ll be lots of pictures that I’ll learn from. This is reason I thank Steven J. Sasson every day for inventing digital cameras:~)

@ Liara — That is so sweet and thank you:~) As photography is a passion for me, it’s nice to think that the pictures I take do show parts of myself…it’s sort of like visual writing.

Sara December 22, 2009 at 11:21 am

@ Talon — JC will be reply later, but I wanted to thank you for your nice words about these photos. You should have seen the 100 or so that I took while trying to figure out the zoom lens that came with the camera. I have some shots of sea birds and, to be honest, you really can’t tell that they are birds. I still have a lot to learn.:~)

I know the footprint picture was so strange! It was one of the first I took with the new camera and I got two shots of the footprint, both the same. The problem is I have no clue how that happened. I took footprints later and it didn’t happen so I can’t explain it, but it was one of the pictures both JC and I liked…so thanks:~)

WOW – every photo I’d steal to take into my studio to paint – or try to!!! These are awesome Sara! Does JC rent out? I wish I had a technical advisor here! I open boxes on the end that says “Open Other End” so manuals??? Oh no, not me! My kids taught me how to use my cell phone! Took me three times on the tutorial to get how to load videos on my blog. It was the fourth time taking NOTES that did it I think. To me it is still a miracle from the techno-god who obviously felt pity for me, crazy old woman in cyberspace!

Dear Person Behind Camera:
Seriously??? You don’t think these pictures are fantastic??? Do you need an upgrade on your prescriptive lenses??? They’re beautiful!!!

Dear Person Writing Today’s Blog Post:
Thanks for staging coup and taking over the blog. Sara must be a little out of her mind these days. Let us know when she’s back to her old, non-self-depricating self.

xoxoMelissa

Thank you all for your comments but they really have nothing to do with me. Sara is a very talented photographer and writer. My only job is to convince her of this. She loves all of you because you are the people who really see her beauty. Talon and Melissa are so right that her pictures are good and will only get better. I know it’s not PC to say but I wish I could slap her when she doubts herself (Plus she’d kick my ass if I did) but I love her talents and I thank all of you for realizing this. Suzen, I’ve not that great with manuals but I would rent myself out but Sara may have some objections to this. Sara makes me sound perfect but I have many faults that you may not appreciate. I do love Sara and her faults and hope she can put up with mine. I love her just the way she is. PS, my golf game is great and I don’t need to listen to my own advice! (Even if it’s true).

How cute of JC to help you out, and “champion” you and your photographs! Love the images, and what a perfect gift!

Suzen– I’m blushing from your compliment!!! Thank you very much. Maybe we bloggers are similar. My kid is still trying to teach me how to do a text message. She starts out all encouraged and patient, but ends up saying something like, I’ve got to go now or maybe we can work this another day.”

Regarding renting out JC, I don’t know about that. He is a special man and I kind of like keeping him around. He is my best friend and supporter:~)

Sara December 23, 2009 at 4:39 pm

@ Melissa — I think it’s just that I expected more with this fancy camera. I’m so used to my Sony and it’s ability of let me just “click and shoot,” but I imagine time will change this as I get to know this new camera:~)

I was proud of JC for staging the coup and reminding me that what I saw with judgment, he saw as beauty:~)

Sara December 23, 2009 at 4:50 pm

@ Patty — Okay….you guys convinced me. JC was right…although you know I WILL pay a price for admitting this. JC will just love the fact that you showed me that I should have trusted myself and the photos. However, I also know that in addition to JC, I am lucky to have such a supportive and wonderful group of blogger friends:~)

Sara December 23, 2009 at 4:55 pm

@ Carol — I am so pleased you liked the photos. I was almost in tears about this post. I had it all planned with new photos and talking about my camera until I actually looked at the photos. Afterward, I was ready to chuck the camera and delete all the photos…so JC stepped in at the right time. Now that I look at them, I do feel as sense of pride…they’re not bad and some are even good. Anyway, I still have the camera and I’m still learning to use it. Persistence was always a strength…JC’s post just reminded me of it:~)

I too don’t have the patience for reading manuals. Sara, these photographs are outstanding! Absolutely brilliant… especially the skies.

Tsh pshaw… who needs manuals when trial and error will do? :P

Fabulous images, Sara. They’re very pleasing to the eye. :)

@ Tony — Yeah…I obviously believe in trial and error….but this camera is adding up the errors. JC gave me TWO big books about it and I am using them slowly when all else has failed:~)
