Two Chairs
On Sunday, the day I prepare Monday’s Picture Story post, I have fun looking through pictures to find ones that speak to me.
Sometimes I even get a theme going where I find I’ve taken a few pictures of the same type of thing, like trees, and they all beg to tell their story.
Today, the theme is CHAIRS. I didn’t realize until looking through my pictures how many times I actually took pictures of empty chairs.
Hmmm, I’m not sure what this says about me as a photographer, but I’m not going there right now:~)
The Challenge
I give you three pictures of different chairs. They come from a variety of places, even a couple from the UK.
They are in groups of two. I think I like these groupings best because it tempts me to imagine a conversation between the chairs.
Today, your challenge for the comment box is to pick one picture and be sure you state which you picked in your comment.
The basic challenge then is to tell something about these chairs. You can tell their names, a brief story about them, an imagined conversation or whatever tickles your fancy when you look at the picture you chose.
Extra Credit
I’m not sure how this extra credit challenge will work. It might be a smashing success or a devastating disaster:~)It just sounds like it could be fun…so we’ll see.
Your extra credit challenge is to pick someone’s comment about the chairs and take whatever they said to the next place. For example, if the person named the chairs, you might start a conversation between the chairs or say how they got their names.
VERY IMPORTANT: If you choose this extra credit challenge, you MUST name the person whose comment you used, otherwise it would probably be very confusing.
Oh, and I welcome you to visit more than once…just in case someone writes about your comment and YOU want to add more to what they said. Again, just be sure to say whose comment you are adding to.
In addition to the header picture (Chairs A) here are the other two pictures:

(Chairs B photo)
“Look at those padded chairs over there. Don’t you think the floral pattern is making her look chunky?” Blue Stripey chair deck chair is whispering in case the padded chairs overhear.
“I like flowers. And look at those blue arms! Oh, I wish I had arms and blue ones would be lovely!” White Stripey Chair sighs and watches some people approaching. “Oh oh! Someone’s coming. We have to be quiet!
Blue Stripey Chair hates being told what to do. “I think I’m going to collapse on purpose when they sit down.”
“Blue! That’s not very nice!”
“No, but it’s funny!” Blue starts laughing hysterically when a plump gentleman gets ready to sit down and Blue shuffles backwards. The man lands on the ground with a grunt and a muttered curse.
White feels sorry for the gentleman, but is allowing the woman to sit quite comfortably on her. “Stop it!” White whispers to Blue who continues to cause the poor man nothing but grief and a sore behind. The man, after a final attempt, gives up and tells the woman he’s going to sit in one of the padded chairs as they are much more comfortable anyway.
The woman agrees and starts to get up out of White who promptly squeezes herself so that the woman is temporarily trapped. The woman regains her balance when White finally lets go and staggers over to the padded flower chair and flops down and mops her brow.
“See?” Blue says to White. “I told you it was fun!” Blue looks over at the people now sitting comfortably in the smug padded chairs. “Don’t you think that the flowers make that padded chair look ridiculous?”
“Yes! And blue arms? Whoever heard of blue arms? And who needs arms anyhow! Oh, look! More people!”
“Awesome! More fun!” Blue chuckles with delight.
.-= talon´s last blog ..Honestly… =-.
@ talon — I love you so much:~) This is exactly what I hoped someone would do. It’s a wonderful story and fits the chairs you chose so well. Thank you for sharing this. I will forget Blue and White!!!! I also love that you left the door open for someone to pick on the story of Blue and White…anyone game?
BTW you are a fantastic writer:~)
Talon, that was awesome!!!
I smiled all the way through your comment story. Absolutely brilliant.
Picture C: Chair 1 — “I feel so empty and uninspired.” Chair 2 — “Yeah, I feel a little stuck myself. We could both use a chairlift.”

@ Davina — It’s hard to come after talon isn’t it, but you did a great job…I LOL about the chairlift:~)

Hope and Love sit very much connected to each other, glad to be together, as they overlook the beautiful ocean. They talk about their friend Grace, and how they miss her–she’s been so busy traveling all over the world after the recent natural disasters. Hope and Love need to rest a bit while Grace does her work, then they will fly out right behind her to see what else needs to be done. But for now, they sit near the ocean basking in the warmth of the sun, waiting for Peace to return from the surf and plop down next to them with his surfboard in the sand. They are enjoying this time together–so refreshing to take a little break– because there is much work left to be done.

@ Joy — What a clever story!!! I liked the idea of Hope, Love, Grace and Peace each taking their turns at making the world a better place, while also finding time to enjoy the sun and surf:~)
Chair Photo C
Two seemingly unoccupied chairs sit facing the ocean as gentle waves lap the cool sand and the fading sun dances on the water. Couples stroll the beach thinking that these chairs have been abandoned to the soon-to-be-rising tide. But these chairs are far from empty.
Upon them are two kindred spirits, recently cast from this world into the world of never more forever. Each has their own story of how they came to be here, staring into the distance, dreaming, wishing, hoping just a moment that it was all a mistake.
If you listen, you can hear their sighs of longing in the wind, as they share their stories, and then fade slowly away.
@ Linda — I loved how you filled these chairs and the mystery of the two kindred spirits caught in the time between.
This story just begs for more. Perhaps I’ll add a bit myself. The spirit in the blue chair gives an extra long sigh, causing the other spirit to raise his eyebrows in question and say, “What it is my lady. that makes you so sad?” Look where we’ve ended, you and I. Isn’t this a beautiful place?” Soon, we’ll disappear from here to someplace even better! Yet, you seem so lost and sad. Can you tell me why?”
Anyone want to pick up on the next installment?
I love chairs too, Sara. They’re such a icon of welcome and friendship…”come, sit a spell with me.” I have a few miniature chairs, and then because of them I was given a whole bunch of tiny chairs as gifts. You know how that is. Since I’m not a “stuff” person I have found good homes for most, but have kept two small wooden adirondack chairs that I adore.
I like the chairs in photo B. I think they have a story. Their eyes meet across a crowded lawn. They begin to inch closer. And closer.
“Is that you?” says one.
“Yes” says the other, full of emotion. “How long has it been?”
“Too long.”
“I’ve missed you so.”
“Yes. But remember, I always told you I’d find you. I didn’t forget. I’m wearing the turquoise stripe, just as I said I always would.”
“I know. Me too. I, I love you! And sometimes, there’s magic, so quickly!”
They embrace as only chairs can do.
p.s. I purposely did not read Talon’s comment until after I wrote this, because who can top that?
.-= Patty – Why Not Start Now?´s last blog ..Meaning Mondays: The Sniffles Edition =-.
@ Patty — I think you did an excellent job with this…it’s a chair love story. It reminded me of “An Affair to Remember” only with chairs. I loved the line, “They embrace as only chairs can do.” It’s so perfect for these chairs. Great story:~)
H Sara .. chairs B – they’re out too early, it’s still cool, cold wind blowing around, no daisies on the grass to confirm that spring, let alone summer, has arrived.
Which park are we in today number two? Are we down the road in Brighton, not in Eastbourne any more .. oh well – new set of visitors. Probably more visitors braving the cold here though – but I can’t see any ..
Number one: I know we’ve got new seating turquoise plastic stripes, but our wood work looks a little tired, do you think they’ll give us an oil once this season is over?
It’d be nice to be in a group don’t you think number two? We could go up to nine .. we can count that far – we’re quite clever deck chairs .. but there’s no deck .. strange name for us.
We could all be in a circle with a large picnic rug in the middle .. a good bottle or two, some festive picnic food .. and have a good natter – make a change from the bingo.
Oh well dream on – two bottoms would be good – they’d keep us warm for a while ..
Hey – I hadn’t realised we’re called blue stripey according to Talon .. I was going to call her Falon .. but my eyes be going .. & mi brain .. so just caught myself in time ..
Perhaps I need a comfortable chair so I can have an afternoon nap .. what do you think stripey blue number one?
Our Channel is ok though .. chairs in number three are a bit much looking out over the Ocean – I wonder why they took themselves so far away .. the Channel is just as good – isn’t it two?
Oh .. I’m rambling .. better ramble out of the park and see if we can find some bottoms .. Sara might turn up though & we don’t want to miss her – do we number one .. so we’d better just rest and wait .. wait .. wait … wait for the sun to go down, and the sun to come up ….
.-= Hilary´s last blog ..The Okavango Delta – the perfect place to Safari or holiday? = Yes for me! Part 2/3: John’s Story…. =-.
@ Hilary — Great story:~) I was much appreciative about being involved in your story. After all, I did turn up to take their photos:~)
I thought you’d enjoy knowing that these two chairs are British. They live in Hyde Park, one of the most beautiful parks I have ever visited. I took so many photographs of flowers and animals, it was amazing.
Chairs C.
They’re once again at the beach after many months tucked away in storage with the treadmill. In storage, all they can talk about is stretching their legs and seeing a little sunshine.
At the beach, they garner mixed reactions from the crowd.
Some will covet them and be envious of those who get to sit in them.
Others wonder how they can compete against all the fun that soft sand and cool water present.
Green chair: Remember when our masters brought us to the Amalfi coast and that beautiful supermodel with a great tan sat on me for a brief moment? That is the high point of living as a chair.
Blue chair: Greenie, shut your seat. I’m not in the mood for your existential nonsense. I just hope I don’t get crushed by a sweaty 500-lb guy. I really hate that. Hard to breathe. I’d rather be left to bake in the hot sun with salt water, sand, and those god-awful sand fleas.
Green chair: Oh, Bluey. Why do we always end up bickering like an old married couple? Why can’t we have a romantic interlude every now and then like Patty’s stripey chairs? Why can’t we have what they have? I want some of that magic!
Blue chair: Say wha?
@ Belinda — This is so much fun. You are all such talented writers!!! My favorite line in your story is “Greenie, shut your seat.” I had a good laugh with that one. Maybe Patty’s chairs could give some tips to Green chair and Blue chair so that they can once again feel THE MAGIC?
A Thank You…
I just want all my readers to know how much I appreciate you. You are always willing to give these picture challenges a try. Plus, you always amaze me with your creativity. Thanks:~)
In Photo “A”, they are a mother and daughter pair of chairs, and they are both thinking, “Oh my god. Look what she’s wearing!”

@ Shay — That’s really clever…if those were dresses, I’d be saying the same:~)
I love this, Sara. Hilarious! I’m fond of talking chairs. In fact, talking chairs feature in my Darwin’s Regress strip… that’s how much I love ‘em! Good to see the chair love on other blogs too. Huzzah!
CHAIRS B
1st Chair: “Get me a beer, woman.”
2nd Chair: “Get it yourself, you lazy slob.”
1st Chair: “But I’m busy just sittin’ here.”
2nd Chair: “So am I.”
1st Chair: “…”
2nd Chair: “Are you sulking, you big baby?”
1st Chair: “Oh, go and throw yourself off an SUV.”
