Story Photo: Help Me Make a Choice

by Sara on July 5, 2010

I have an empty space in my room and it’s begging to be filled with a picture. I want to hang just one picture in this spot and I need help choosing it.

I’ve narrowed the search to five and that’s where you and the Story Photo challenge come in.

The Challenge – Exercise Your Right to Vote

Today’s challenge is to look through the following pictures and vote for your favorite. To participate, you must pick only ONE picture or choose “none of the above”. Don’t worry, if you pick “none of the above” I will not toilet paper your blog:~)

BTW, you can only vote once, but you are allowed to threaten encourage others to vote the same way you did in the comment box. A little political influence can make decision-making much more fun:~)

Once you make your selection, here are some questions to consider:

1) What made you choose this picture?

2) What type of frame would you suggest?

3) If you picked “none of the above,” what were your reasons? Don’t worry; you won’t hurt my feelings. Well, maybe just a wee bit, but I’ll get over it… in about five years:~)

Here are the choices:

SELECTION ONE

SELECTION TWO

SELECTION THREE

SELECTION FOUR

SELECTION FIVE

SELECTION SIX:  NONE OF THE ABOVE

Just put your “selection”  in the comment box along with your answer(s) to the questions to consider.

Making the decision

Thank you in advance for helping me with this decision. As I will be out of town, I will collate the votes on my return and let you know what picture, if any, won. The results will be announced on Monday, July 12th in my Story Photo post.

NOTE: There will be a post on Thursday, July 8th. It’s about a very important subject to me and is one of the reasons I’m not around right now:~) I hope you will stop by and read it.

Have fun, be creative and enjoy:~)

Sara, I like ALL the pictures. But I will make a choice. I guess I’ll eliminate #2 first, because I think that, over time, the extreme close-up of the flower’s “face” would start to feel intrusive and creepy. This is too bad because the purple would go well, I think. But it’s just too too too for the long term.

I adore all four of the others, so this is going to be hard. #3 goes next, even though I really like it. I have always been partial to photographs of bare branches, and the jet trail makes me think of escapes to…anywhere. But in the end, I like a more summery picture to live with.

Next to go is #5, only because I love the remaining two pictures the most, so that leaves #5 out. I very nearly chose it, because I think the green would go, and the water droplets on the leaves would be a soothing sight. But 1 and 4 are even better, for me.

The first runner-up is….#1. I LOVE the little bird and the whole composition of the photograph. A little outdoors indoors, always a good idea in my book! The angle of the eaves in the shot makes it eye-catching and unusual, and the blue sky is cheerful. But….I have to go with….

#4. This is my favorite. I can almost hear the waves. The Michigan girl in me loves the idea of the sand and the water, I can FEEL the cool breeze when I look a this. And the stark beauty of the scrub plants makes me think that this is a private place, a place where a person’s thoughts could wander. So I choose Number Four. :-)

The rules I don’t follow to well
So I’m going to put down all five
#1 no way would I set under it
What if that bird came a live
#2 I think this pictures not bad
But I also think it is a bit bold
It remains me of the movie of the Flower
from hell that sucking out our souls
#3 This picture just take it right back
For they sold you a bad one you see
Did you not see the scratch on the blue
Behind those leafless bearing tree
#4 I like the best with its bit of the sea,
The brush, the dirt, blue sky and sand
with the colour you put for your wall
Yes I think that picture would go grand
#5 I think you’re kidding me, I’m sorry
It’s rude of me but what could I say
You’d have to bring in a frog and turtle
And in that corner you could let them play

So {number} [#] (4) (four) (IV) is my pick
And with it I will forever stick

Great only one more part
of this challenge to do
and that is part two
a frame, yes a frame
I must give some name
A silver one will do

I loved no. 4 the first time I saw it and I love it even more seeing it again. It’s the type of photo that draws you in and lets your imagination play – what’s down the beach, what’s just up over the dune, how does that tree manage to cling there, what images are there forming in the sky, will there be something good to eat when I get home after sunset…

I see it with a white mat and a distressed black frame.

Hi Sara,

What an interesting challenge this week. All these pictures are beautiful and are special in their own way. That makes it hard to choose, but you did give us a glimpse into the room. Therefore, I made my choice based on the colors in that corner. I picked #5. To me the green leaves and the brown work with the soft warm glow of the lamp and neutral color of the wall. I felt the ones with a lot of blue were too cool for the space.

For the frame, I would choose a medium shade of wood with a burlap-style mat.

I am looking forward to your decision, and I’ll be checking in on Thursday!

Hi Sara,

My choice? “None of the above” Sorry!
1) What made you choose this picture? I didn’t choose any
2) What type of frame would you suggest? A wood frame or imitation wood, brownish anyway.
The reason: I’m not an artist and many times I have a tendency to “squared thinking”
Three of the pictures are mostly blue and the other two are mostly green, so it seems strange to me to place one of them in a mostly brown area. Seems to me that a picture of a sunset with mostly orange and brown colors would fit better, but again, I’m not even allowed to do the decoration in my own place! :(

Hi Sara,
Lovely photography! Mmmm!
I would love to help you by proffering my opinion.

1) I love bodies of water and I get the sense from reading your posts that you do, too. Plus, the browns in the room blend well with the sandy bank in the photo. The blues contrast nicely with the browns in your room — me thinks.
2) I’m horrible about choosing frames. But, my inclination is to have the photo mounted on a hard back and mount it frameless with no glass–Au naturel. ;)

As an aside, I really loved number three, too. I like the contrasting colors and the added element of the plane’s contrails.

I send you my warm wishes and positivity that you are doing OK, Sara. If there’s anything I can do to help, please let me know.

Oh, I definitely choose number four! Why? It’s a serene and uplifting shot, full of possibility (sunrise over the mighty waters), but also showing the brush and debris in the dune that have taken a beating from the wind and surf over the years — and are still beautiful. In fact, maybe more beautiful, for having endured all those days and nights of tough challenge from nature on the edge, to witness a new sunrise each morning.

It’s like impermanence and new beginnings, all rolled into one. Plus, the composition is just perfect. Oh, and I’d select a pale, natural wood frame. If you decide to mat, go with a wide one, plain white. Since the photo’s colors are too pale, I wouldn’t overwhelm it with bright or dark hues.

It’s going to be beautiful, though, whichever one you choose. I love that you are using your own art for your home. It’s such an affirmation! :)

Ooh, I really enjoy them all! I would recommend buying small frames and sizing them so that they can fit side by side on the wall. And then charging people to view the gallery. :)

I’m choosing between pictures 1 and 4. Both are peaceful, with no rough edges to disturb the serenity of the room. But I prefer picture 1 because it has more life in it. When you look at the bird, it’s like being out there too, trying to decide where your next flight shall be!

I like number 4.

1. I love to look at pictures that are scenes in houses. It’s peaceful with a lovely sky and I like it a lot.

2. A pretty white frame.

Good grief, those are all perfectly acceptable choices… how can I choose just one? GAH! :(

Okay, how about #5? The other images are just magical, but there’s something about this one that keeps me looking…

1) What made you choose this picture?
If I peer long enough, I may find a secret in each tiny water droplet, and maybe the droplets will fall out of the image onto the plant on your table below… yes, art feeding reality. I like that.

2) What type of frame would you suggest?
Perhaps an rugged, earthy yet slim frame would do? You’d really have to try out a couple of choices because the green serenity of the image would already contrast with the wall’s orange warmness quite nicely.

Sara, I look forward to your post on Thursday. I’m already intrigued…

I am going for #4, because of the colors, and the thoughts. When I look at it, I wonder how long the trees roots will help it to hang on there, how long it will stand, and how it grows like that. Added to the beautiful sky and shoreline, it makes a great contrast and picture.

I like the bird. Don’t ask me why because I don’t really know why.

Although if you ended up using the ones with the sky in the background, you can have that – Look out the window, this is what the real sky looks like, versus, Look at the picture, this is what a photographed sky looks like – effect. Yes, I am being confusing.

Hi Sara,

Oh, you know I love these posts of yours.

I had a hard time deciding between #4 and #5, but lean toward #4.

To me, this photo is one of those where you feel you’re “there”. You know, the kind of photo where you feel you can walk right into it. For me, it feels serene.

A frame? That’s tough not knowing what the rest of the room looks like. What if you made it frameless and had it mounted onto a canvas? (You know, how they do that now and the picture wraps over to the sides?). Just a thought.

What fun!!! I’d pick #4 – both for the mood and ambience of it and also it would probably look best on the beigey wall. It’s hard not seeing the rest of the room when it comes to a frame choice. What “metals” are prominent? Any black? Do you have white painted baseboards/trim around doors, or natural wood stains? Are you doing a mat? Double mat? How would natural barn board look?

Yeah, (haha) I’m picky about artwork.

Dear Sara — zero question for me — the beach!

Even before I scrolled down that wall was crying “beach!” And your photo is perfect. The tree branches come in second for me.

Fun idea for a post. Will be fun to see the photo on the wall.

Howdy!

I choose number four and for the following reasons:

* I like it

* I think the orangey browns in the pic will go well with the orangey-browns in the room.

* It has a “spacious” feel to it

* I like it ( did I mention that already?)

Well, they’re all really beautiful but #3 has me mesmerized. Something about the impermanent juxtaposed with the permanent. The leafless branches, only leafless for the season; the airplane’s path, fleeting and fading; and the sun and the sky, shining and blue in their true essence. It’s just so open for interpretation and in looking at it, the viewer may somehow see a little bit of him or herself.

Oh, those branches Sara, the third picture. Every photo here is a work of art, but those branches just did it for me the first time I saw them and they still do it for me. But I do admit to having a thing about branches. I found the most amazing Marimekko wall hanging from a place called Textile Arts. I have a green one in my office and a brown one at home. (Here’s the link, if you want to see: http://txtlart.com/tuulikit.html). But lucky you, you can have beautiful branches of your own making!

I’ll opt for none! As a real estate agent who photos homes for a living, I immediately appreciated the simplicity of the picture. Assuming relatively standard wall heights, I like the image as it is.

I’d pick #2 because it would add a nice splash of colour to that corner. Plus, the flower would complement the plant on the table… and the colours in the centre of the flower just happen to match the colour of the paint on your wall and the lampshade.

I’m not great at picking frames or mats though. Maybe someone else who’s lurking about would like to help me out with that? Anybody?

Hi Sara .. NUMBER FOUR – everyone .. ??!!

Sea scape .. with wonderful thoughts .. is the coast eroding, where will the tree go – what kind of drift wood will it turn into .. I love the pounding sea and there’s so much to see here .. what will come round the corner ..

A silvery gray frame, with the picture inset and backed with dark grey .. – it will look good in your corner .. I have cream walls here and silvery frames, wall lights etc around .. and the silver will match the photo frames below ..

I look forward to the surprise tomorrow – what’s in store?

Hope you’re having a good time .. all the best Hilary

Sara,
Please please do not toilet paper my blog…
I love all of these photos, but the energy in the photos is greatly different than the energy in your room, so none truly fit that space. Your space looks to be comfy, cozy while your photos are dreamy, otherworldly….I think you might not be able to settle completely because these photos might spark your interest in something other than settling, you look at them and want to *Live*, not rest…
That’s about energy though..if you want aesthetics, your readers have made excellent suggestions…
