A Toast to Barbara Swafford

by Sara on September 23, 2010

A Taste for Blogging

When I think of Barbara Swafford, I think of learning how to bake sourdough bread.

An essential part of baking sourdough bread is the “starter” dough; a small amount of “live” dough that starts the fermentation process that is so essential to making sourdough bread.

Starter dough is often saved and passed down through generations. It has helped many new bakers make sourdough bread for the first time.

What does this have to do with Barbara? She’s the one who gave me my first “starter dough” so I could learn how to bake a blog.

She taught me the fundamentals of making my blog come alive in the blogosphere. I learned about the importance of starting with the basics.

Before finding Barbara and Blogging Without A Blog, I had the flour and the salt, but I didn’t have the “starter dough.”

About a Blogger

When I first started blogging, almost four years ago, one of the things I really wanted from my blog was to have a dialogue with other people who also wrote and blogged.

I knew diddly squat about how blogging worked or how to make my dream become a reality. I wrote posts and published them without paying attention to the recipe that made a good blogger.

Naturally, I didn’t get many comments other than from friends and family. This was something I didn’t understand until a friend recommended Barbara’s blog to me.

On her blog I found everything I needed to know about becoming a better blogger. I read posts from her archives, learned about commenting and many other points of “cooking” up a decent blog.

Even in her first comment on my blog, Barbara passed on her wisdom.

Hi Sara,

I love the quote. It’s one of those quotes that gives a person hope when they’re faced with dark times in their lives.

My life has had a lot of ups and downs, but with faith, patience, perseverance and determination, it works out. Often in a surprising way.

P.S. Thanks for stopping by and commenting on my blog. From your comment, I found you. I’m looking forward to reading more of your work.

The Blog Comment – My Favorite Ingredient

Her postscript gave me my first inkling about how a blog was different than a website.

I took her advice and began commenting on other blogs; that marvelous part of blogging I now enjoy. I visited other blogs (usually found via Barbara) and left comments to show my appreciation of the posts of others.

It wasn’t long before a few people stopped by my blog and left comments. And in time, I found myself in an absolutely wonderful, supportive blogging community that is alive with gifted writers, photographers, illustrators and even videographers.

They all make me think, laugh and sometimes even cry. We share comments and our adventures in blogging. I wouldn’t trade the process of commenting for anything!

When I’m in doubt and need a friendly word of advice about how to be a better blogger, I go to Blogging Without A Blog. From creating your own avatar to using plugins and understanding the “techie” side of blogging, she’s got all the ingredients in her cupboard. And, she knows how to use them:~)

I love blogging, but I would not have known about its yummy delights had Barbara not been willing to freely share her “starter dough.”

Through Patricia’s Wisdom

I want to thank Patricia of Patricia’s Wisdom, for organizing this tribute to Barbara. Once again, her beautiful wisdom showed the way for me to say thank you to a wonderful blogging teacher and mentor, Barbara Swafford.

I’ve been blogging since the Xanga days, and then when the WordPress era came, my introduction was Problogger, so I couldn’t really say that I learned my starter stuff on Blogging without a Blog. Barbara’s blog, however, has introduced me to a bunch of interesting blogs and more importantly, several new friends such as yourself. So that’s definitely something I appreciate. Her blog is a great place to hang out. :-)

@ Kelvin — You make an excellent point. It IS through Barbara’s site that many of us find like-minded readers and sites. I also think this is because her questions are so open that you get to know her commenters better than some sites.

Yep, Blogging without a blog, is a great site to hang out in…I totally agree.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts about this today:~)

Hi Sara – What a lovely tribute to Barbara. You’re right, comments are such a huge part of what she does. She seems to be everywhere, encouraging and supporting. I wouldn’t know you if it weren’t for Barbara and Davina. Great gifts! And awesome for Patricia to coordinate this, isn’t it? What a happy day for Barbara. Can’t wait to see her reaction.

@ Betsy — I’m sure I’d still be blogging and loving it so much if Barbara hadn’t taught about commenting. Her lessons are so varied, but she makes them easy to understand…especially for a nontechie, like me!

Yes, Patricia is the wise one…you organized this and kept it open for anyone who wanted to participate. She also reminded us. Then again, Patricia is an excellent organizer:~)

Hi Sara .. wonderful tribute to Barbara .. and I love the sour dough connection – your picture at the top is great.

I’m so pleased I connected with Barbara and I suspect many others of her commenters .. just something twigs and clicks and we connect – then appreciate the different takes on life .. a learning curve that goes on and on ..

Wonderful thoughts for her .. and us .. and no challenge?! See you soon .. cheers Hilary

As one who once baked with “starter” dough, I loved your analogy. It fits Barbara to a “T.”

Those just entering the blog world would do well to dig into her archives, watch how she replies, and visit those of her community.

@ Lori — That’s the first I thought of when I sat down to write the post. I always loved the story of sourdough bread. It has quite a history and I liked that it represented links between people…something Barbara Swafford does so naturally:~)

I imagine Barbara is a bit overwhelmed right now. She starting a new site and now she being pinged with all these mentions. If you were here right now, I’d say…”Just sit back in your chair and soak in all the love and appreciation. No reply is necessary…this is just for you!”

Love the metaphor of sourdough starter, Sara. It reminds me of living in NYC years ago and experimenting with sourdough; we named our starters Felix and Oscar. (Btw, I bet you make a mean loaf of sourdough).

But I digress. This is a beautiful tribute to Barbara. I always enjoy visiting her blog: great ideas, compelling conversation, and a warm welcome. Who could ask for anything more?

Sara,
Love this analogy of “starter dough”…so fitting to where I was when Barbara took me under her wing…and helped me along the way…

It makes me wonder, though…if I”m starter dough…and I’m not “don” yet…does that make me half-baked????

Love the post, Sara!!!

@ Lance — When I think of you, it’s hard to believe you ever needed Barbara to “take you under her wing.” You are one of my heroes because you are so willing to step out and physically support different good causes. Oh, many of us can write about them, but we’re not there…giving the hugs, organizing the “smile videos” and the many good causes you’ve supported. I think tBarbara was very wise to take you under her wing. I think she knew you were someone special.

And, as the saying goes “it takes someone special to recognize someone special”…well that’s Barbara forte in life:~) NO, you are definitely not “half-baked!” Then again, you are one of funniest of the “starter dough” that Barbara sent out!!!

R.I.T.F.L.M.*.O.
When ones mouth overloads ones bottom
Ones friends wisely scatter
Thus, I’d be losing friends

Therefore, I should watch what I say. Then sometimes implying is just as bad to. But saying I should watch it, people start to think. (What did he say or imply?). Even tho I didn’t say anything people are thinking I did and behold friends scatter.

Okay like the guy next door see a pile on his grass and his neighbor walking his dog. Will the one guy knows what he is talking about and the other don’t. Next thing you know the one guys house is on fire and the others car and house has had a chainsaw taken to them. All the time the old woman across the street is telling her dog pups-ee. “See I told you they were crazy. Do you need to go out again pups-ee baby?)”

See one needs to know when to keep ones mouth shut and step around or over things.

And the refrain will be “Ya, see, bro, keep your mouth shut or a diaper on that mutt’s butt….Hey, it’s FRIDAY:~)

Lori (Surfer Girl) — I hope you’ve been catching the good waves lately:~) I agree that Patricia did a great job with this and that Barbara spreads good blogging joy. She never lectures and is always gentle, even if someone gives her a hard time. You are right: There is a lot of love going on and that’s a good thing…what we’re all doing is probably exactly what Barbara would hope we’d do…share ourselves in a kind and considerate way…just like she does…and….

Like you do. I always feel you have the same type of gentle energy that Barbara has. I notice it when I read your comments.

It’s funny that bring up music because today I’m in a silly mood. I stumbled on some funny rap songs that just crack me and I’m that fond of rap. You got to watch this video about singing rap backwards. It’s a bit long, but stay with it. I’ll be stopping by later for a visit and just in case you don’t subscribe to comments, I’ll leave it at your site.
