Food for thought
It’s the day before my Thursday blog post. I am hungry and coming up empty!
I must head over to my blogger’s cupboard; the place where I keep all the bits and pieces of ideas I’ve collected over time.
Let’s see.… Well, here are a few spicy samples, but they have a beginning and no ending. There are some staples that might fill my belly, but they’ve been used a bit too often. Over there, hidden in the back, are the slightly used, but not very tasty jars of mixed metaphors and lost storylines.
So, my cupboard, while not totally bare, is as thin as watered-down soup.
Looking inside the cupboard again, I wonder what would happen if I combined a portion of the staples with a pinch of the slightly used jar of metaphors and a dash of the spicy samples.
Eat my words
Here I go, tossing them together with hope, like sailors back from the sea amidst a superfluity of nuns. I stir these together. Let’s see if I have created a lexicon of learning about new word recipes.
They sit together with an uncertain flavor; these words I’ve taken from my cupboard and cautiously melded into the plush and airy soufflé of possibility.
Let’s give it a taste; there’s no time to waste.
Yuck! These words do NOT dance well together. Perhaps I should try adding some sugar and salt. Then they might fit together like peas in a pod. Maybe I could toss in a few sweet metaphors filled with sugary promises. I need a dangling modifier…
Sadly, this post cannot be made into a gourmet meal for the hungry literate; it is more for the illiterate tastes of this desperate writer.
If only my blogger’s cupboard were not as bare as a baby’s bottom, I might fold this into a better tasting story.
It’s such a shame that I am so unprepared for fixing a post for all of you hungry people. You must settle for this written tripe:~).

I like that all that food for thought. Fun post. You have me smiling, Sara.
Lynn´s last [type] ..Register love- more street food and cubicle lunch
@ Lynn — I’m pleased that you smiled at this one. It was fun to write, especially since I really was out of ideas…then my editor and friend, Davina, tossed the idea of writing about my writer’s cupboard and it just took off:~)
Hi Sara,
Looks like you pulled together a tasty dish from available ingredients. Good job. I can relate to that on several levels, both culinary and literary. My creative cupboard is kinda bare right now.
@ Linda — It happens!!! I was lucky that Davina sent me an idea, which fired up my need to meet a challenge and then the writing was not only easy, but a lot of fun:~)
Hi Sara – You made it a stone soup day on the blog! Good work! I’ve despaired, too, during periods of having nothing that felt “write” and you’ve inspired me to persevere and get something up there in the future when it happens.

@ Betsy — Thank you. I enjoyed your post about the dimes. I’ve looking to see if any come my way.
I do usually have ideas in my writer’s cupboard. I leave them there and work on them occasionally. Eventually, one will bloom, but this week none were ready yet…so I had to make as you say the “stone soup.”
And yet a tasty meal you did prepare in this post! Delightful Sara…
Now if you could work the same magic with the 70+ drafts I have in on my computer!

You have an incredible way with words! If this piece was a meal, it would be fit for a king.
This post was cute.
It’s a cute idea for a post xD
And you write real well. =P
@ Liz — Thank you. I love your avatar…that’s so cute:~)
Thanks for the visit!
Sara,
I greatly enjoy preparing meals..and I often say I can make something delicious and fulfilling out of nothing..which is what you have done here..made a beauty filled something to share with all of us..thank you for your inspiration..
I *love* the surprises I find when I visit here..
Joy´s last [type] ..Wednesday Wisdom- A Beauty Filled Day…
@ Joy — Thank you for you said about this post. Because I was stuck, I was given the idea of writing about my empty cupboard by Davina of Shades in Crimson. It’s amazing how “a challenge” can turn things around. Not only did this post finally get written, but I had a great time writing it:~)
I’m actually NOT a very good cook. However, my boyfriend, JC, is an excellent cook. He’s a chef and teaches cooking. The only problem I have is that he’s a messy cook, at times and MY JOB (fair is fair) is clean up.
Metaphors so many but none can be posted.
You don’t want to give babies prunes or pork-n-beans.
Still without all the ladies of the night and the sultry red lights.
Could you really have a preacher’s convention?
And story lines questions that seem to have no end?
What do you have with an all woman’s church choir?
Add some spice thought then throw in a touch of bland.
Bob sweet heart, I want you to kiss me like you’re on fire.
Yes darling yes, Will that is if your mother wasn’t setting between us.
So for the things
you had to chose from
From a cabinet
that’s almost total bear
You did quite well
I’m thinking
With this Blog
That you did shared
Tho no challenge
Did you post there
I’m not about to go
And split hairs

@ Ellis — What great praise from you. This is wonderful poem. My favorite lines are these:
“Add some spice thought then throw in a touch of bland.
Bob sweet heart, I want you to kiss me like you’re on fire.
Yes darling yes, Will that is if your mother wasn’t setting between us.”
I love your sense of humor:~)

@ Eliza — This was so much fun to write and it did happen after I had been totally blocked. I tried several other ideas and they just weren’t moving anywhere. All it took was a challenge by my writing coach, Davina, and then I was off to the races:~) Sometimes, as writers, we get isolated by our craft, especially blogging writers. It helps when we get together with other writers and share:~)
lol! I nibbled away and enjoyed every morsel, Sara!

Cute post! I love it! So creative, as always!

@ Caity — Why thank you…I’m blushing with pride. How goes the Thanksgiving plans for New Zealand? It’s hard when you move to another country that doesn’t share the same traditional holidays, but I know you will have fun introducing this one to your family in New Zealand!!!
Hi Sara! Hey it was “Chef’s Surprise”! That’s what I call dinner when I scrape together something with what I have on hand and it turns out not just edible but good! Just like you did!
hugs
suZen
@ Suzen — Right up front I must tell you that only totally healthy ingredients went into this “Chef’s Surprise.” I have been reading your posts and am becoming much more aware of what’s good for me and what’s not good for me. I do appreciate this:~)
Hi Sara……I just love leftovers! And, speaking of leftovers….leftovers all go well with a good glass of whine!!
Ken
@ Ken — LOL I will enjoy my “glass of whine.” Sometimes it just tastes so good to have that delicious whine. As usual, you can slip the a laugh in…it’s something I always appreciate you:~)
Thanks, and yes. You are older than man parents, most likely.
They’re in their thirties. o.o
I don’t like waiting; I can be very impatient at times. But I am a strong girl, and I would appreciate life a lot more if those around me offline would be supportive of me. However, I do know that it is better than nothing – having them in my life period, I mean.
@ Liz — Writing is a wonderful outlet. I know that sounds like gobbly gook, but I kept a journal for most of my childhood, into my teens and even as young adult. It kept me sane. Now days, blogging can do the same thing, as well put you in contact with like-minded people.
While it’s important to find supportive people, it’s just important to support your own unique self. One thing I do is put a sticky note where I can see it regularly and it reads, “I like myself just the way I am!” It’s kind of like the Bridgette Jones saying. Anyway, the contract I have with myself is that when I see this note, I will say the phrase aloud. I can whisper it so that no one else hears me, but I must say to myself!!! hey, give it try or find something like this that suits you:~)
Sara
I’m full to the brim after reading that.
Your words definately danced for me – don’t know how you do it on such meagre rations.
Something missing though… a drink.
As Woody Allen says…
“Man cannot live by bread alone… there must also be a beverage.”
Perhaps next time you’ll serve drinks.

Very clever, Sara! You must have one of those magic cupboards that just looks bare, but when you peer deeply into it, you find there’s a whole lot there. Now I have to go get something to eat!
Patty – Why Not Start Now?´s last [type] ..Kind of Like in Life
@ Patty — Thank you. I’m really pleased that you enjoyed this post. It means a lot to me!
What seems to work well me when the cupboard appears empty is to be given a challenge. The day I wrote this, I was really and truly empty…none of my words could play well together. Then Davina challenged me and it just became a fun project.
Sara,
Picking up where Patty left off above, it seems like something magical happened from the point of empty cupboards to this creative post. I have visions of the Great Hall in Harry Potter floating through my head. Are you a Harry Potter fan? I’m picturing the head tables suddenly becoming populated with a great feast. Your post was very creative.

Anyway, thank you for your very nice words about this post. I had a lot fun writing it:~)
Sara, this was a very yummy post!
One of my favourites of yours so far. It didn’t take you very long to write either. Seems there was way more in your cupboard than you realized! You wrote with a politely sarcastic attitude that reminds me of Tony from Trottersville. I hope he gets to read this. Outstanding.
PS. Thanks for the mention. It was a joy to watch you play with this one. You’re just as good at taking on challenges as you are at offering them.

Cheers back at you!!!
I hope you’ll not think of me as an insensitive clod, Sara, but I laughed so hard reading this. I needed a good belly wobble. I love the words you threw together for this post, and you’ve really let your humour off the hook this time!
Tears in my eyes. Thank you. Seriously…
@ Tony — Well, I had to do something. I was missing your writing and the wonderful way you have of putting your words together. However, what pleases me the most is that you got a “good belly wobble” from reading this post. There’s nothing better to me than making someone laugh:~)
You know, just toss things together. Call it fusion food and charge big bucks if you want!
