Old Dogs: Rest in Peace

Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened. ~ Anatole France

We’re feeling a bit sad as our old dog died on Tuesday. She was a real trooper. As you can see, she was blind for the last years of her life.

Blind or not, she always managed to find her way, especially to the food bowl. I swear she could tell time. She’d stand in the kitchen staring at me, even when she was blind, clearly saying, “Hey, it’s food time. Get a move on.”

She loved chasing squirrels, taking walks, and stuffed toys with obnoxious squeakers in them, which she promptly removed, along with lots of stuffing.

Most of all, she was a teacher in acceptance. She accepted what life gave to her, including her blindness and other ailments with a grace that amazed me.

Always kind, she watched over her pack, which included a variety of different animals, including the human ones.

Ms. Dix was a gentle soul. One who will be missed by all those who knew her.

Rest in Peace, old dog.

I’m taking some time off to remember this special dog. She was a member of my family and I grieve her passing very much.

Rest in peace, Ms. Dix. And hugs to you, Sara. I feel your pain – I’m still mourning the death of my beloved elderly cat Sophie in August 2010. There is nothing like the unconditional love of a pet. xo

Sara, you have my heartfelt sympathy, tears and all. I feel your pain, too. It is very hard to say goodbye to your friend of so many years. I know that although you will miss her very much that she is indeed resting in peace. I will be thinking of you – take care of yourself.

I can definitely see her enthusiasm for life, even though she couldn’t take it in through her eyes, from the picture you shared. I wouldn’t actually have been able to tell that she was old in dog years from the picture. I’m glad you were able to share some great times with her.

Oh Sara, I’m so sorry to hear about your Ms. Dix’s passing. I know how hard it is. She looks so contented in the picture! They don’t complain, they just do the best with what they have, and they love love love. Bosco and I send our love.

Sara – I am so sorry for your loss. We are heartbroken at losing our elderly Little Daisy a few weeks ago. Like your Ms. Dix, she was blind, and deaf, but it didn’t stop her. For such a tiny little thing, she was a huge presence and our house is very empty. Wishing you peace and comfort in your fond memories of your treasured friend.

How heartbreaking, Sara! I will never forget any of the dogs I’ve had thru my life, and I’ve always had one, at least one. They are such teachers and so loyal and accepting of us and forgiving, too, of our human-ness. Sending hugs!!!!

Animal Heaven is getting two wonderful old pets tonight because Ms. Dix is there and so is my friend’s beloved cat, Mongo who I also loved. She died today at 3:30. I am so sorry, Sara, and I know you are grieving hard for this beautiful companion of many years. My heart goes out to both of you who lost beloved pets. It is one of the hardest things life gives us to do. Lots of love and hugs to you. xxxx

I’m so sorry to hear about Ms. Dix, Sara. I know what a hard time this is for you guys right now, and I want you to know you are in my thoughts and prayers. Some people say a dog is just a dog, but nothing could be further from the truth. A dog gives us love, steals our heart, and becomes part of our family. And we miss them when they are not around. Hugs, Sara:)

Sara, how sorry I am. Truly, truly truly. Perhaps only another dog lover or animal lover knows where you are right now.
WE know these creatures are not a separate species in our home. They’re just family. WE know that they have strong personalities that will be missed like an arm. WE know you can’t ‘just get another one’. WE know that they give more back to us than we could ever really give to them. Unrelenting, unconditional love, lots of giggles, positive energy, natural intelligence, lessons in humility and acceptance as you said, knowing that every second of life is for living. – Even taking out the trash is monumental!

We’re all here for you Lady.
RIP Ms Dix. I know you were cool as dogs reflect their ‘owners’.

As Zip ran out the door unleashed and into the street the other day, I thought about what would I do if I lost him? And he is just a year old….I have never been so attached to a pet before ( of course they were really the kids pets and they paid their way)

I can empathize with your loss. Yes indeed Rest in Peace Ms Dix

I am so sorry Sara. Losing a pet is truly like losing a member of the family and it is such a horrible pain. I am sure you will always remember all the good time you had with one of your best friends (they don’t call dogs “man’s best friend” for no reason) and she will always hold a cherished place in your hearts. <3

Hi Sara and JC .. old dogs do hold themselves in our hearts .. and we have so many memories of them and their antics. They don’t judge – they’re always happy and ready to be with us .. I can understand your loss totally .. with lots of thoughts from over here .. with a big hug or three or four .. Hilary

    • Sara says:

@ Hilary — Thank you very much. JC and I miss Ms. Dix. It’s strange. The house is so quiet. Because she was blind, she would get around by bumping things — not hard enough to hurt herself — but it was way of staying independent. I got hearing her, however. Now, the house is eerily quiet. Thanks for your kind words:~)
